The threat of a major storm moved the Grayson game to Thursday night. Although the crowd was a little more sparse than it would have been if the game had been on Friday, the team demonstrated some good offense and had a number of strong defensive plays. We’re going to be watching an improved team on October 14th when Covington plays against Narrows.
The rain forced a change of venue for the “all classes” reunion and Alan Dressler and the City of Covington provided
a dry, spiffed-up location at the Covington Recreation Center. Stepping through the doors took you right into
cougar country. Blue and gold was everywhere Saturday.
The day began with school tours and displays by local historical agencies. Covington High School staff members, who
give of their time and energy every day, added another day to the week to provide one last tour of our beloved school.
That feeling of belonging will always be there. The comments and reactions to the memorabilia throughout were how good
Covington High School had been to all of us!
The Alleghany Historical Society was on hand with some memories of Covington High School and other
historical events of the Alleghany Highlands including a 1912 picture of the first CHS football team! Thank
you Oliver Reed. Thank you to Linda Jones Morrison for all her hard work in manning this table.
The Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society was on hand throughout the day with a wonderful display of their
Covington High School Memories including photos done by Charlie Hammond who, while teaching at CHS, took photos
of the activities of the school students, teachers and support personnel. Slides were shown throughout the day to share
the moments captured by Mr. Hammond during the years. Thank you Karen Hammond for this great gift
that touched so many lives. Volunteers for AHGS were Donna Dressler-Miller, Linda Myers Tucker, Patsy Sampson,
Michele and Hubert Newton, Phil Amick and Fred Tucker.
None of this would have been possible without our behind-the-scenes crew. Thank you Cindy Nichols Williams,
Ginger Elmore, and Elders Riley and Warren from the LDS church.
Then Cougars went onward to the recreation center for socializing. Many classes were present to show their school spirit
in their own special way. There was no shortage of food which was provided by the class of 1978. The Class of 1967 was
playing candy pong. Young and old alike enjoyed this fun.
We wish we had the space here to show you all the tables and alumni who were there. Facebook has some great pictures
of the alumni and displays from the day. The decorations represented the “blue and gold” theme from the moment you
entered the door with blue and gold sitting front and center to say “Happy 110th birthday” CHS (1912-2022). Music from
all decades took us back for a walk down memory lane.
A special “thank you” to Luck Truck and Luca’s Pizza for providing us with great food.
Our special reunion ornaments are available for purchase at $15.00 each. This is a reunion special offer and the
price will go to $20.00 each after the reunion. Please be sure to make arrangements to get your ornaments.
The committee has worked hard these last few months and we would like to recognize them. Julie Stanley,
Susan Crowder and Rylee Reynolds from Old Town Covington, Marian Paxton and Linda Jones Morrison from the
Alleghany Historical Society and Donna Dressler-Miller from the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society.
We’re going to do this again! Be there on the 14th when Covington plays Narrows.
Until then, ONWARD COUGARS.
