The Covington Cougars (0-4) lost for the fourth straight time this season following a 17-7 away loss to the James River Knights (2-1).
The Cougars did what they needed to do on defense and that was slow down the Knights who entered their matchup with the Cougars averaging 27 points a game.
Despite only putting up 17 points, Conner Church for a second straight year caused problems for the Cougars. Church who scored two touchdowns in last years 34-32 victory over the Cougars rushed for a game-high 114 yards along with a score in ground attack.
However, despite their best efforts keeping the Knights out of the end zone, the Cougars were only able to get on the scoreboard once during the game. Neeko Jeter scored the Cougars lone touchdown of the game which came from 22 yards on a pitch-and-catch from Desmond Jordan. Jeter also had three receptions.
Meanwhile, Jordan had a season-high performance with passes completed (14) and passing yards (126). Seven of Jordan’s passes were caught by Purcel Turner who now has 17 receptions on the season. Turner finished the game with 40 yards receiving.
The Cougars who only have four home games this season are back on the road this Friday for a third straight road game as they head to West Virginia to face the James Monroe Mavericks (3-0) who are coming off their third win of the season following a 41-0 shutout victory over Meadow Bridge.
The Mavericks beat the Cougars last season 35-6 as they used a 21-point fourth quarter to hold off the Cougars.
