Hunt For Child Hits Blind Trail
MANNINGTON, W.Va., Mrs. A.J. Hayes, of Clarksburg Street, this city, stated last night that the child found on her doorstep and reported to have Lillian MacKenzie, kidnaped at New York, is not the MacKenzie child. Mrs. Hayes stated that the baby was a fondling and that she had made arrangements to adopt it. She added that no one was at home when the child was brought to her, but returning a short time later, found the infant, wrapped in a blanket, on the doorstep.

Water Carnival At Pool Friday Night
Friday night, the date set for the water carnival at Covington’s municipal pool is also Ladies Night. All the ladies will be allowed free entrance to the pool. Mother’s day at the playgrounds will be celebrated on Saturday. At this time all mothers are invited to bring a picnic lunch and spend the day with their children.

Slaying Suspects Seized
One of Alleghany County’s biggest manhunts in recent years ended at 2:10 p.m. Sunday when two youthful murder suspects, brothers from Roanoke, were captured by County Sheriff M. W. Swoope, Deputy W.C. Cummings and State Game Warden Forrest W. Hanks at the Ross Helmintoller farm on top of Peters Mountain. Arrested were John Lewis Baker, 22 and Paul MacArthur Baker, 18, both of Roanoke. A loaded double-barrel .12 gauge shotgun and a .22 revolver tentatively identified as the murder weapon were found in their possession, along with two light-colored rain repellant jackets splattered with bloodstains. The prisoners are being held without bond in the Alleghany County Jail.

Retired Alleghany County Sheriff Leon Smith Dies
Retired Alleghany County Sheriff Leon Smith, 76, of 2618 Valley Ridge Road, died Friday at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Low Moor. He retired from the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department after a 37-year career having served as a deputy for 27 years and county sheriff for almost 10 years.

Alleghany Wins Brackman Cup
Members of the Alleghany High School Mountaineer football team hoist the Brackman Cup aloft after defeating the Covington Cougars 42-13 Friday night at Mountaineer Field. The Brackman Cup was named after the late Emory Brackman, longtime sports editor of the Virginian Review who died in April of 1996.
