The Alleghany Highlands Arts & Crafts Center has released its schedule of classes and exhibits for the summer from July through August.
Classes:
“Alcohol Inks with Jennifer Galvin” – If you’ve experimented with alcohol inks before, but would like to learn some more techniques, this would also be a great class!
This class for students ages 14+ will be using alcohol inks to create beautiful, colorful pieces of artwork to take home. Even beginners will enjoy this workshop. Everyone will go home home with a lovely tile fit for framing, (or to use as a trivet or coaster).
Date of class Sat. July 16, 11am-2pm Pre-registration is required by July 12th.
“Kid’s Summer Art Camp-Session 2” – July 18th – 21st (Monday-Thursday)
A creative break to make art and have fun while doing it! Ages 6-12 will unleash the wonder of using their natural creativity! The price is $100 (scholarships available).
Register by 14th to ensure a seat in a class of 12.
“Paint Your Own Barn Quilt” – Learn to paint your own Barn Quilt with Pam Hirt. This is an image of her First Place Award from the 2021 WV State Fair.
This 2-day class will take place on July 26th & 27th from 11am-3pm. There will be room for 8 students (16+), so register early! The cost is $90, and Pam supplies most of the materials.
“Gelli Monoprint & Beyond Workshop” – August 6th (10:30am-4:30pm) This printmaking is a fast easy way to learn the basics of printmaking. Wear clothes to “play dirty!” come ready to experiment. Best for ages 14+, no experience necessary. No cell phones, please.
“Plein Air without Panic!” – Aug 20th & 27th. This class will be limited to 8 students, and the cost is $85 total. We meet promptly at AHACC at 10 am for each class and will finish at 1:30 pm. Please click below for more info.
Judith’s love of plein air (outdoor) painting has combined her love of the outdoors with her love of painting. She truly appreciates that the landscape changes each day in beautiful ways to create endless artistic inspiration.
Exhibits:
“Paris Portfolio & Close to Home” – Beginning Tue, July 5th through July 29th
James Knipe is a retired photography professor from Radford VA will present images of decaying buildings that depict the “relationship between the clearings we create for our houses & barns and the aggressive advance of nature to reclaim the soil”, and a series of scenes from a fellowship to Paris.

“Photographs” – Beginning Tue, July 5th through July 29th
Robert Sulkin lives in Roanoke, VA and is Professor Emeritus at Hollins University, where he taught photography from 1980 to 2019. Sulkin’s work has been exhibited solo, invitationally and competitively in Virginia and as far away as California.
This FREE Gallery exhibit is open to the public daily Monday – Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm & Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm.
