Greeks And Turks Reported Fighting
Verification of a report from Constantinople of fighting between Greek and Turkish troops at Kara-Burun, a cape on the Asiatic side of the Sea of Marmora was awaited here today. In the course of conflict, which the telegram said started when the Greeks made an attempt to land a regiment on the cape, a Turkish torpedo boat is reported to have struck a Greek vessel with a loss of many lives. After an engagement on the coast with Turkish troops, the message added, the Greeks sought refuge aboard their ship, which was fired upon and sent to the bottom by the destroyer Kemal Pasha.

Disorders Mark Reopening Of Rayon
“This sort of thing has got to stop,” Governor George Peery of Virginia said when informed of the clash today between union and non-union workers at the Industrial Rayon Corporation plant today. Fist fights broke out at the Covington mill when a party of workers attempted to enter the plant, which has been strike-bound since late March. The governor said he received a request from the sheriff of Alleghany County last night asking that state troopers be sent.

Home Demonstration Club Is Re-Formed In Low Moor
A new beginning with a new home and the Home Demonstration Club of Low Moor is again organized after a lengthy leave of absence from the Extension Educational Program of Alleghany County. The club has taken its name from the first home demonstration agent to serve Alleghany County under whom the Low Moor Home Demonstration Club was first organized. The club is now the Margaret King Home Demonstration Club.

Consumption Down, Revenues Up For ABC Board
While fewer Virginians are tipping the bottle, profits from state Alcoholic Beverage Control stores reached a record of $36.3 million despite a four percent drop in consumption. During the 1985-86 fiscal year, the Covington ABC store sold 126,313 bottles of distilled spirits with gross revenues of $899,075.85.
The Clifton Forge store showed gross revenues of $417,160.30 from 64,272 bottles sold.

Snakes Alive
The Charles P. Jones Memorial Library presented a program entitled “Snakes Alive!” June 28 in the fellowship hall of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. A crowd of over 200 people attended the program and demonstration given by herpetology specialist Ron Cromer of High Point, N.C. The program was held as part of the library’s Summer Programs series, and all programs in the series were sponsored by Highlands Community Bank.
