Patsy G. McKinney, of Alleghany County, Virginia, has died at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. McKinney, and by her parents Elmo Jones and Juanita Carter Jones who owned and operated one of the last Alleghany County watermills which processed grain, Beaverdam Fallsfarm and mill. She was also preceded in death by her beloved four-legged canine companions including Bobbie, Spookie, Tiggie, Dollie, and Sadie. Patsy is survived by her daughter Waneta McKinney, son-in-law Travis Shrewsbury, and granddog Tofu.
Patsy was a graduate of Dunlap High School and studied history at Davis& Elkins College (WV). She moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she was employed as an assistant to management at L.H. Jenkins book bindery. This suited her well as she had an avid appreciation for books throughout her life. Patsy met her husband when she was an amateur drag racer at a Richmond track in the early 1960’s. She returned home to the highlands in the 1970’s and spent the remainder of her career in a variety of roles with Alleghany County Public Schools. After retiring, she also served a term on the Alleghany Highlands School Board. Patsy was a baked goods vendor at the Covington Farmers Market and also served as market manager. She had a loyal following and took a lot of pride in her baking talents.
Much wisdom and humanity were lost with Patsy’s passing. She was a repository of knowledge for days gone by for skills such as farming, gardening, raising poultry, foraging, canning, and so much more. And her immaculate home was always open to those in need, both two-legged and four-legged.
In keeping with Patsy’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Think of her when you bake a cake and give it to someone else to brighten their day. Think of her when you help an animal in need. Think of her when you assist someone less fortunate than yourself, especially children. Patsy was a fearless warrior for animals, and memorial donations may be made to the Alleghany Humane Society, 9313 Rich Patch Rd, Covington VA 24426 or to the Monroe County Animal League, PO Box 343, Union WV 24983.
