Senate Hearing Opens Tuesday On Tax Bill
The Senate raises the curtain tomorrow on the first act of its tax-cutting performance with the cash customers waiting to see: Whether they will get a refund on part of the taxes they’ve already paid this year, or whether the new lower rates will be delayed until July 1. The third possibility, that no cut will come this year, appears remote.

Astronauts Walking On Moon
Apollo 16 astronauts John W. Young and Charles M. Duke Jr. stepped on the lunar surface today to begin man’s first exploration in the mountains of the moon. The astronauts, who almost had their landing aborted Thursday, were in good spirits after receiving word this morning that they could make all three planned moon walks. For the first time, the first steps of an astronaut team on the moon were not televised to earth because of a problem with an antenna on the lunar ship Orion.

Protesters Rally To Support Sankar
An estimated 75 persons participated in a peaceful demonstration in front of the Alleghany County Courthouse Sunday afternoon on behalf of jailed Covington businessman Harsha Sankar. The protest, which lasted for about 40 minutes, also touted a call by Sankar’s father, Dr. Krishna Sankar, for legal reform in Virginia.Lobbyist Jackie Leathers stressed that the reform movement is to continue even after Harsha Sankar is released, saying education about the legal system and their constitutional rights is needed by citizens.
Highlands YMCA Holds Annual Awards Dinner
The Alleghany Highlands YMCA Board of Directors elected new officers for 1997-98, unveiled its “Vision 2000” plan for future development, and honored several volunteers and professional staff with awards at its annual meeting Saturday night at the Alleghany Country Club in Valley Ridge. An estimated 75 board members, volunteers, and guest attended.

C.F. Water Plant Receives Excellence Award
The Clifton Forge Water Treatment Plant has received the 2011 Excellence in Water Treatment Plant award. The award will be presented by the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water Waterworks Recognition Committee May 4 at a luncheon in Roanoke hosted by Southeast RCAP.
Lady Chargers Drop Cougars In Six Innings
A perfect season- it has to be sitting in the back of the minds of the Bath County softball team after dispatching Covington 13-2 in six innings Friday at the Jackson River Sport Complex. The win helped the Lady Charges improve to 2-0 in Pioneer District play and 12-0 on the year with seven games left on the regular season schedule, while the loss dropped Covington to 0-2 and 0-7.
