The Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (7-2) varsity softball team saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday by the Floyd County Buffaloes, 8-7.
The Lady Mounties had big days at the plate from Makenzie Kimberlin (4-for-4), Kinsey (1-for-4) Middleton, and Kendell Keene (2-for-4) whom combined for seven of the teams 10 total hits. Kimberlin, had a game and season-high four hits. Middleton, provided the team with three RBI’s including her second home run of the season. Keene, also had a home run for the Lady Mounties.
Despite being backed by seven runs and 10 hits from the offense, Keene (L), took the loss on the mound. Keene lasted only three innings where she gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits, while walking three and striking out four. It was Keene’s first loss on the season.
Jaden Nichols (W, 0-for-1), despite surrendering seven runs (all earned), picked up the victory for the Buffaloes. Nichols, pitched a complete game, giving up the seven runs on 10 hits while walking a game-high six batter and striking out nine. The two biggest strikeouts of the game for Nichols came in seventh inning, where she struck out Daphne Shinault (0-for-2) and Ashley Thompson (0-for-1) to open up the inning before getting Averi Phillips (0-for-3) to pop out to end the game.
Hallie Williams (1-for-3), had a big day at the plate for the Buffaloes. Williams, had a game-high four RBI performance including what was the eventual game-winning two-run double in the fourth inning.
After the Lady Mounties grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI’s from Keene and Kimberlin, it seemed the Lady Mounties were on course for their seventh straight win. However, the Buffaloes came right back with a four-run inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The lead would last all of a couple of minutes one-third on an inning as Keene blasted her solo home run over the center field fence to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the third inning the Buffaloes regained the lead at 5-4. With the bases loaded, Carly Thompson (0-for-2), grounded out with one out which brought in Williams to score. Sable Manning (1-for-3), added an RBI single in the inning to give the Buffaloes a 6-4 lead.
Once again, the Buffaloes lead would not last as the Lady Mounties came right back in the next inning with three runs to take the lead 7-6. The Lady Mounties grabbed all three runs on one swing coming from Middleton on her three-run home run.
With the momentum shift heading back to the Lady Mounties, the Buffaloes halted that shift by coming back with two runs to take an 8-7 lead. With two runners on base, Williams, ripped a double into center field that brought in what were the two game winning runs.
The Lady Mounties will look to bounce back on Tuesday when the team travels to play at Glenvar.
