Covington leads the state in effort to fund public schools, according
to a report released by the Virginia Education Association.
The report, entitled “Virginia’s Educational Disparities,” is released
annually by the Education Association. The latest report, based on research

divisions in dropout rates, expenditures per pupil, teacher salaries and students
continuing their education beyond high school.
One of the oldest houses in Covington was razed Friday at 130 W. Riverside Avenue.
The 164-year-old dwelling was known historically as the Henry Hoke House and was
built around 1833. The brick front section from 1833 was added to a log structure in the
year which had been built earlier and had been covered over. There were also two outbuildings
in the back yard, one of which had been a kitchen and the other a storehouse.
The property is owned by the heirs of the late William “Red” King who died approximately
two years ago. The house had been built on one of the original lots laid off for the town
of Covington by Dr. James Merry around 1818.

Deficiency Bill Of Two Billions Reaches House Today
Carrying a jolting reminder that the cost of World War II didn’t end when the
last shot was fired, a $2,471,498,548 deficiency appropriation bill went to the
house today with appropriations committee backing.
Nearly 75 percent of the total is accounted for by two items directly connected
with the war: $151,894,500 for the Veterans Administration and $300,000,000
for relief in occupied areas abroad.
