The Alleghany Highlands Community Services will host a free movie on March 24th at 6:30p.m. at The Historic Masonic Theater. March is National Developmental Disability Awareness Month! The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

AHCS strives to build understanding, encouragement, and to provide new opportunities for people who have developmental disabilities. Come out to support a great cause and help raise awareness!

“I Am Sam” is the compelling story of Sam Dawson (Sean Penn), a mentally-challenged father raising his daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) with the help of a unique group of friends. As Lucy turns seven and begins to intellectually surpass her father, their close bond is threatened when their unconventional living arrangement comes to the attention of a social worker who wants Lucy placed in foster care.

Quotes:

Sam: Yeah, you don’t know what is like when you try, and you try, and you try, and you try, and you don’t ever get there! Because you were born perfect and I was born like this, and you’re perfect!

Rita: I just don’t know what to call you: retarded, mentally retarded, mentally handicapped, mentally disabled, intellectually handicapped, intellectually disabled, developmentally disabled…
– Sam Dawson: You can call me Sam.”

“I love you like a song. I love you like in a song.”
