Father Tom Collins of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Main Street in Covington confirmed that a homeless man broke into the church and vandalized the sanctuary with a fire extinguisher on Thurs. night, March 11.
Harry J. Newman, noted that after the homeless man broke into the church and removed a porcelain statue of the Virgin Mary and a Russian plaque, that he broke into his CPA office adjacent to the church and pilfered his desk drawers where he took two silver dollars.
The thief left behind both the foot-tall-statue and the memento in Newman’s office where he smoked a cigarette and left without taking his hat with him.
According to Newman, the homeless man also gained entry to Garten Development’s property above Newman’s office where he took a shower.
Father Tom Collins said, “He did not do a lot of damage to our church, but it took us four to five hours to clean up where the fire extinguisher that he used left a fine powder over the pews.”
The homeless man whose name has not been released was apprehended by the Covington Police who were able to get him to confess to his crimes.
