Jury Finds Tech Negligent

The parents of two Virginia Tech students killed in the 2007 campus massacre worked for years to prove university officials were negligent for waiting to warn students of a gunman on campus, and a jury agreed with them on Wednesday. It took jurors 31/2 hours to find that university officials botched their response to April 16, 2007, massacre that left 33 people, including the gunman, dead. The jury determined in the wrongful death lawsuit against the state that the parents of Julia Pryde and Erin Peterson each deserved $4 million. The award likely will be sharply reduced because Virginia law requires such awards to be capped at $100,000.

Congress To Raise National Debt Limit

Congress is expected to raise the $430 billion national-debt ceiling today, just as the actual debt bumps against it, but not before Democrats get off another volley against President Nixon’s economic policies. Legislation for a temporary increase, through June 30, to $450 billion, was first on the House calendar today. An effort to pass the bill Monday under speedup procedures requiring unanimous consent was blocked by one of the Democrats trying to force action on what they call loophole-closing tax reforms.

CLIFTON FORGE — A sold-out crowd filled the Historic Masonic Theatre on Sunday evening for the Virginia 250 Flag Day Patriotic Tribute, a special celebration marking America's upcoming 250th birthday.
The free concert featured the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro David Stewart Wiley, joined by special soloist Dr. E. Daryl Duff.
One of the evening's most memorable moments came during the "Armed Forces Salute," when local veterans were invited to stand and be recognized as the musical tribute to their respective military branches was performed. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause as veterans throughout the theater were honored for their service.
The presentation was made possible through the support of the Alleghany Foundation, Historic Masonic Theatre, Town of Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, City of Covington, Mountain Gateway Community College Educational Foundation, Mountain Gateway Community College, Alleghany Highlands Arts Council, and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.
