Virginia Smith, a resident of Covington, has shared old photographs taken early in the 20th Century.
Her father served in Battery D, 246th C.A.C., Va. National Guard, of Covington.
The photograph of the men was taken following a display of marksmanship achieved with the 12″ gun at Ft. Monroe, Va.
On the fourth shot fired on Aug. 19, 1931, by the Covington National Guard, a pyramidal target moving seven miles away at sea was completely destroyed by the shell fired from the 12″ gun.
Virginia’s father is pictured standing as the 11th guardsman L-R in the photograph of the 12″ gun and its crew.
