The DSLCC Roadrunners (11-13), men’s basketball team has struggled since their second half of their season started in the middle of January.
After nearly a month off from in-game competition, the Roadrunners saw their 9-4 record, fall below .500 this past weekend for the first time since the team was 0-1.
The ending to the Roadrunners game on Friday, was symbolic to how the teams second half as been.
The Roadrunners saw a double digit first half lead slip away from them as Christendom Community College edged the Roadrunners 69-68.
Trailing 68-65 with under 10 seconds left in the game, John Paul Vander Woude, recorded a four-point play after he knocked down a three-pointer while being fouled by Dayshawn Hamilton. Vander Woude, converted the four-point play by making the free-throw to give Christendom a 69-68 lead.
With only seconds remaining, Hamilton caught the inbounds pass and found an open trailing Noryen Lasley, who missed a wide open dunk that would of won the game for the Roadrunners.
The turning point in the game for how it would end, came early in the second half for Christendom. After trailing by 11 points after one half of play, the team opened the second half by coming out with a completely different looking team as the team went on a 15-1 scoring run to take a 37-34 lead.
Despite having four players finish in double figures, it wasn’t enough for the Roadrunners to snap out of their losing skid.
Lasley, added another double-double to his statline this season, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while McCrary, scored a team-high of 18 points.
The big three of McCrary, Lasley, and Jaylen Hudson, when those three score a combine 40 points were undefeated prior to their loss on Friday. Hudson, scored 11 against Christendom,
Even though the team has had its struggles in the second half, head coach Brandon Garrett is fully confident in his team heading into the final stretch of the season before the playoffs.
Vander Woude, scored a game-high 28 points for Christendom, while Owen Kennedy, scored 13 points off the bench.
