Dr. David Wheeler of the Family Dental practice in Covington is among the first medical offices in the Alleghany Highlands to install solar panels.
Dr. Wheeler turned the switch on a 17.63 kW system that is expected to offset approximately 75 percent of the dental office’s annual energy use.
The project has 41 panels and was designed and installed by Altenergy Solar, a full-service solar contractor headquartered in Charlottesville, with offices in Staunton, Idaho, Maryland and Michigan.
The solar array will power the dental practice’s electricity, ranging from office lights to equipment utilized for dental procedures.
“Going solar is a small part of what we can do to slow global warming by moving us closer to being carbon neutral. By being
a visible part of the community, this project may inspire some to start conversations about reducing their carbon footprint.
Of course, I also think it’s going to be a good business move,” said Wheeler.
Wheeler’s investment reflects a growing trend across the country to invest in solar power as the cost of electricity has increased. Wheeler worked with Altenergy’s team, with over 16 years of solar experience, to secure grant funding for the project. The grant provided up to 25 percent of the money needed to purchase, install and construct the solar system — a key assist for any small business looking to control costs. Additional local financing was provided by Highland Community Bank.
“It has been fun to work with Altenergy. Their entire crew worked hard to make it all come together, even in the middle of a pandemic. They have been responsive, helpful, courteous, professional, and importantly in these times — safe,” said Wheeler.
Wheeler and Dr. Erin Cassilly provide general dental care for the Alleghany Highlands community. The dental practice offers a wide range of services such as preventive, restorative, emergency care and oral appliances that treat TM joint problems, snoring and sleep apnea.
Altenergy designs, builds, and installs efficient solar energy systems to generate clean, renewable energy. Altenergy was acquired by
Tiger Fuel Company in May 2021 and will transition to operating business under a new name, Tiger Solar
