The Alleghany Mountaineers boys Tennis season came to an end in late May after losing to Radford in regionals, 5-0.

The team would finish with a record 5-5.

One of the biggest highlights of the season came in the playoffs when the Mountaineers knocked out undefeated Grayson County, 5-4 in the regional playoffs.

Baron Leitch and Maddox Crance each had victories in singles and doubles in the Mountaineers victory over Grayson County.

Head Coach Seth Davis on the teams victory over Grayson County, “Very proud of my team for coming back from 1-3 and 3-4 deficits. They faced an undefeated team and never quit.”

Jason King (singles), Coree Nicely (doubles), and Nathan Clark (doubles), each had victories as well for the Mountaineers.

As mentioned, the Mountaineers season would come to an end a few days later when they traveled to Virginia Tech to take on Radford in the regional semifinals, 5-0.

The Mountaineers will lose two players, seniors Xander Harris and Ethyn Kimberlin.

“I thought we had a very good season considering none of my players had competed in an actual Tennis match before this year. To beat an undefeated team like Grayson County in the regional playoffs was a huge accomplishment. We’re really going to miss seniors Xander and Ethyn. Those guys were good leaders and competed hard”, said Davis on his teams season performance.

Should all of his players return, Davis will have a plethora of talent, including all five of the winners from their regional playoffs victory over Grayson County.

“I’m hoping a lot of my players return in 2022 and it’ll be great to have a full season”, said Davis.

Best Singles Record for AHS; Crance 6-2, Leitch, 6-4, and Nicely, 6-4.

Best Doubles Records for AHS; Leitch/Nicely, 6-2, and Crance/Nathan Clark, 6-2.
