HOT SPRINGS – Jailyn Ford twirled her fourth no-hitter of the season and the 14th of her stellar career as the
Bath County Chargers blanked the Pendleton County (W.Va.) Wildcats 9-0 Wednesday.
Ford struck out 14 and her only blemish of the game came in the first inning when she hit the second batter she faced.
Battery mate, catcher Amanda Shifflett, erased that runner from the base paths by throwing her out at second and the Wildcats would not reach base the rest of the game.
Bath County gave Ford all the run support she would need by plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Shifflett singled and moved to third on a Jordan Fry single. Ford plated Shifflett with a sacrifice fly and Jessie O’Conner plated Fry with a RBI single. Bekkah Pauley doubled home O’Conner and she would score later in the inning on a RBI single off the bat of Mikayla Miller.
The Lady Chargers added two more in the second when Shifflett tripled and scored on a Ford RBI single. O’Conner followed that up with a double to plate Ford and give Bath County a 6-0 lead after two innings.
The Chargers added two more in the fifth when Ford reached on an error and O’Conner coaxed a walk to put two runners aboard. Taylor Grubbs plated both with a two-run double up the middle.
Bath County added their ninth and final run of the game an inning later when Shifflett singled, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch.
Shifflett paced Bath county at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, scoring three runs. O’Conner was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Ford, Grubbs, Fry, Miller and Pauley had one hit each to round out the Chargers offensive production.
Shifflett leads the Chargers on the season with a .515 batting average (17-for-33). Ford is sporting a 0.11 ERA.
She has struck out 123 batters over 61 innings pitched.
Bath County (9-0, 1-0 Pioneer) will be back in action Tuesday at Alleghany at 4:30 p.m.
