A bat caught in the city of Covington has tested positive for rabies.
According to Covington Police Chief J.B. Broughman, the bat was recovered by a citizen in the South Lewis Avenue area of the city.
The animal control officers took the bat to the environmental health specialist at the Alleghany County Health Department, where tests revealed the bat had contracted rabies.
Police officers are distributing flyers on South Lewis Avenue and throughout adjoining neighborhoods that provide information concerning rabies and contact numbers for citizens to call if they have questions about this incident.
Broughman reminded citizens of the following rabies prevention measures:
– Avoid contact with wild animals and domestic animals you do not know;
– Vaccinate all dogs, cats and ferrets to keep their vaccinations current;
– Call your doctor and the local health department if you are exposed, or your veterinarian and local animal control if your pet is exposed.-Rabies-Positive Bat Caught In Covington.
