Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Virginian Review will begin charging a fee for publication of death notices.
Editor Horton Beirne said today the cost will be $1 per line plus $25 for a photograph.
“The Virginian Review is perhaps the only daily newspaper in the state of Virginia that does not charge for death notices,” he said.
“Today’s death notices are written in the form of memorials and tributes to the deceased instead of news stories as they were in the past. By charging a fee, the family can now say whatever they want,” Beirne pointed out.
“We have resisted instituting a charge for the past 97 years, but what families want written in death notices has changed over the years.”
To make plans for payment, family representatives should check with the funeral home handling arrangements for the family.
