Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. Three local area athletes were recently honored by the Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSCA) with all-state honors.

Bath County’s Mitchell Stinespring and Covington’s Lucas Via were named to the first team All-Group A football team.

Stinespring was named the first team defensive team as a defensive lineman. Stinespring finished his senior season with 116 tackles with 16 of those going for a loss of yardage. He also had five sacks and recovered five fumbles on the season.

Via was named to the first team offense as a lineman. He was a first team All-Pioneer District and All-Region C selection this past season.

Shifflett was named first team All-Group A volleyball team after helping lead the Bath County Chargers to their first Group A, Division 1 state championship this past season.

Shifflett finished the year with 323 kills, including 24 in the state championship win over Altavista. She served up 86 aces on the season but none bigger than her 86th ace of the season, which was the final point scored in the team’s state championship win.

Also receiving state recognition from the VHSCA was Bath County volleyball coach Dave McGee, who was named the Group A, Division 1 Coach of the Year.
