(VR) – Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day is an observance that takes place on the last Sunday in September. This year it will be celebrated September 27, 2026. This solemn, yet important day, was first officially recognized in 1936, originating from the tradition of families hanging a gold star flag in their window during World War I to indicate the loss of a child in service. Over the years, this observance has evolved into a day for honoring not only mothers, but also the families of fallen soldiers. This is a day to acknowledge their resilience and remember our brave heroes.
There are no local events for this special day in our area, but here are some events in Washington, DC:
National Mall Suicide Awareness Walk: Scheduled for Saturday morning, September 26, to bring awareness to veteran mental health. (Veterans crisis line: Dial 988 then press 1, chat live, or text 838255)
Ceremony of the Wheat: Taking place Sunday morning, September 27, at the Sacred Soil Marker in Arlington National Cemetery, which honors heroes whose final resting places remain on foreign battlefields. DPAA (Department of POW/MIA Accounting Agency) has a project called OPERATION BRING THEM HOME. With new technology and DNA their goal is to bring those heroes home and return them to their families.
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Wreath-Laying: The traditional, formal commemoration and wreath-laying service at Arlington National Cemetery on September 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
10th Annual Gold Star 500: A large regional endurance event taking place September 22-26 along Route 66 in Illinois to raise scholarship funds for Gold Star Families.
Legislative bill H.R. 7932 – HONOR Gold Star Families Act: A major focus heading into late 2026 is the push behind this federal legislation. It aims to double the military death gratuity from $100,000 to $200,000 for the families of fallen service members to combat years of inflation. It features a retroactive clause projecting families of service members lost on or after January 1, 2026.
