Annual Forest Expo Held At DSLCC

CLIFTON FORGE – The Appalachian Forest Management Group and the Alleghany County Farm Bureau held their annual expo Saturday on the campus at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

The day began with the National Anthem sung by Lacy Meyer and a prayer and remembrance of 9-11 by Alan Dale Craft.

The show raised over $2,600 for Log-A-Load for Kids – Children’s Miracle Network through a silent auction and selling of raffle tickets on a gun and a Jolly Jump for kids.

Organizers thanked everyone who participated, donated and helped put a smile on a child’s face.

Exhibitors for the day were Forestry Mutual Insurance, Gaines & Critzer Insurance, Heatmoor Stoves, Outside Heating, PA Woodmizer, Carter Machinery, Va. Truck Center, Covington Farm and Fuel, Covington Tire and Quick Lube, Greenbrier Motors, James River Equipment, Dawn Equipment and Rentals, Lawson Products, Thomas Tire, Southern Loggers Co-Op, Dixie Gas and Oil, Boone Tractor, Diesel and Heavy Equipment Services and Lisa Deeds.

Other participants included Alleghany County Farm Bureau, AFMG, Puff’s Pit-Cooked BBQ, Alleghany High School FFA, DSLCC Forestry Club, VLA, Bonnie Zampogna and her Horse & Cart, 4-H Extension Agent, Corner Grocery Gang Band, Kountry Kickers, Lil’ Kickers, Log-A-Load for Kids, Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, Big Al-Highway 64, Boy Scouts, Glen Wilton Fire Department and Dunlap Fire Department.

Winners of the woodsman competitions were as follows:

Loader Competition: John Dooley, first; Billy Coleman, second; Tracy Martin, third.

Speed Chainsaw Under 4.9 cu-in.: David Bostic, first; Jody Hutton, second; Trevor Saville, third.

Speed Chainsaw Under 6.2 cu-in.: David Bostic, first; Trevor Saville, second; Harris Davis, third.

Cross Cut Two-Man: Ronnie and Joey Simmons, first; Leo and Justin Shanks, second; Tracy Martin and Roger Timbrook, third.

Cross Cut Jack and Jill: Tracy and Donna Martin, first; Joey and Cindy Simmons, second; Roy and Tara Craft, third.

Log Roll: Justin Shanks and Leo Shanks, first; Tracy Martin and Dale Martin, second; John Wolfe and Doug Morris, third.

Choker Setting: Joey Simmons, first; Andy McCoy, second; Tracy Martin, third.

Overall Woodsman ($100 and trophy): Tracy Martin and Joey Simmons (tied).

Sponsors for these events included Bennett Logging and Lumber, MeadWestvaco, Fitzgerald Lumber, Blue Ridge Lumber, Grief Brothers, Forestry Mutual Insurance, W.R. Deacon and Sons, Alleghany County Farm Bureau, AFMG, DSLCC Forestry Club, Forestry Mutual Insurance, Stihl, Danny Deeds, Reaves Timber of Virginia, Judd Smith Logging Inc., Jeff Britt Logging, Deacon Brothers Logging, Reed Vess Logging, Aaron Persinger Logging, Big Al-Highway 64, Dawn Equipment and Rentals and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

Winners of these competitions included: First Place (Stihl Chainsaw), Chad Humphries; Second Place ($500), Meade Stull; Third Place ($300), Andy McCoy; Fourth Place ($200), Greg Pritt; Fifth Place ($100), Roy Craft; Sixth Place (PPE), Nathan Thomas.

Other winners of the day included: Guess Tons ($50), Larry Peters; Guess BF ($50), Meade Stull.

Organizers thanked everyone who helped to make the day a success, and they also thanked the sponsors. Organizers also expressed their gratitude to AFMG members, MeadWestvaco Foresters, Michael and Tiffany Bowers, Megan Deacon and everyone else who helped behind the scenes. Their hard work and support were greatly appreciated.
