The Sara Rice Pryor Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy met July 18 at the home of Linda Mayer.

President Dolly Perez opened the meeting.

Dolly thanked Linda for handling the grilling at the chapter’s picnic, which was enjoyed by all.

Annie Sink reported on the miscellaneous fund.

Final plans for the chapter’s yard sale were completed. The yard sale was held August 3 at 8 a.m. and items were reduced to half price after 12 p.m. Money from the yard sale will be placed into the treasury and into the miscellaneous fund.

The chapter placed an add for the sale in the Virginian Review.

Members sat up for the sale the Friday before at Linda’s house and signs were placed and members brought plastic bags for the sale.

With nor more business to be conducted, the meeting was adjourned.

Doris McCoy gave a short program from the book “Mama I Am Yet Still Alive.” She read actual letters from Confederate soldiers, wives and nurses from 1863 during the Civil War.

The Sara Rice Pryor Chapter attended a dedication of the Confederate Iron Cross in Springwood.

The dedication was held at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church in Springwood in Botetourt County, Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m.

The soldier honored with the cross was Lieutenant Martin Van Buren Hickock, Co. D., 11th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America. He was born October 14, 1836, and died April 5, 1913.

Presentation of the colors was given by Botetourt Artillery Camp No. 1701, Fincastle Rifles Camp No. 1326, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Dolly Perez gave the invocation and pledges to the flags were recited.

A tribute to Lieutenant Hickock was given by family members, followed by the dedication and unveiling of the cross.

Lieutenant Hickock was wounded nine times during the war and also became a prisoner of war. He was released and sent home to spend the rest of his life at home.

Curtis Alderman read a poem and wreathes were placed on the grave. Family members also placed flowers provided by Fincastle Chapter No. 797, United Daughters of the Confederacy, who hosted the dedication.

The benediction was given, “Taps” was played and the colors were retired.

The Fincastle chapter provided light refreshments.
