ROANOKE — Kroger is partnering with the Salvation Army in two programs to help those in need have a happy holiday season.
New this year, stores in Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic region — Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and the eastern portion of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio — have put up Salvation Army Angel Trees to raise money for holiday dinners for children and their families.
Each tree contains ornaments with a local child’s first name and age on the front and a scan bar on the back.
Customers can take the paper ornament off the tree and purchase it at the register for $25. At the end of the five-week program, a $25 gift card will be donated to the child’s family to purchase a holiday meal.
Kroger customers who buy an ornament are encouraged to write their name in the “donated by” section on the ornament to be displayed at the front of the store.
In addition, the Salvation Army has begun its Red Kettle program at Kroger stores, collecting funds to help the needy.
“Each year, customers and Kroger associates generously support the Red Kettle Campaign to provide food, clothing, toys and social services,” said Allison McGee, spokesperson for Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic region. “All funds collected are used locally in the community where the donations are raised.”
Last year, more than $125,000 was collected through Kroger stores in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic Division operates 121 stores, 113 pharmacies and 72 fuel centers in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and the eastern portions of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.
Headquartered in Roan-oke, the Mid-Atlantic Div-ision is dedicated to making a difference in the communities it serves by supporting hunger relief, women’s health, our troops and their families, local schools and grassroots organizations.
Kroger is also a strong supporter of the Salvation Army, American Red Cross and organizations that promote the advancement of women and minorities.
Last year, Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic Division contributed nearly $13 million to communities served throughout the region.
