Ten seniors at Alleghany High School, Bath County High School and Covington High School have been awarded a total of $320,000 in scholarships by The Glencairn Foundation, which was formed in 2009 from funds received from the estate of an anonymous donor.
The scholarships are for $8,000 per year for four years, a total of $32,000 for each recipient. Scholarships totaling over $1,000,000 have been given in 2010 through 2014, the only years the foundation has made grants.
The scholarships were awarded Wednesday at the Jackson River Technical Center by Clifton Forge attorneys James D. Snyder and R. Meade Snyder, trustees of The Glencairn Foundation.
Recipients of the scholarships and the schools they will attend in the fall include:
Alleghany High School: Sarah Ashton Blevins (James Madison University), Rebecca Caroline Boothe (Radford University) and Courtney Nicole Glover (University of Virginia).
Bath County High School: Sydney Allen Herscher (Virginia Tech), Dakota Austin
Walton (Bridgewater College) and Ryan Matthew Woodzell (Emmanuel College).
Covington High School: Karie Alexis Forbes (Bridgewater College), Shermaine La’Shay Garland (Virginia Commonwealth University), Sa’Mone Amia Moore (Eastern Mennonite University) and Burke Allessandra Staun-ton (Radford University).
The scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of merit in academic achievement, citizenship, leadership, extra curricular activities and community involvement.
Recipients must major in one of the following areas of study in college: art, dance, drama, economics, English, history, languages, music, philosophy, political science, psychology or sociology at a non-profit, accredited, four-year college or university.
Jim Snyder said scholarships from The Glencairn Foundation will be awarded annually to qualifying students from the three schools. The recipients are selected by a scholarship committee at each school and by the trustees.
