Dear Editor,
Hello my name is Walter Nicely, and I am running for Clifton Forge town council. I attended the debate that the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce had and also a few of the council meetings.
I would like to explain my views on running for council. I will work my hardest for the people of Clifton Forge because you are the reason I am on council. I believe you should be able to ask questions and be able to get an answer when the question is asked and if I can’t give you the answer, I will find it out and get back to you.
I also will work my hardest not to raise the water bill or raise taxes and I would like to implement a program for the elderly and people that are on a fixed income like Social Security and give them some type of reduced water bill.
I believe that the town manager’s contract should be reviewed and discussed in more detail, for example her salary and the $350 car payment that the taxpayer pays along with the $200 they pay every month that goes into an escrow account for her and the mileage she gets paid.
I also want to bring new businesses into the town to bring jobs into the area and I would listen to the citizens if they had ideas that would help the town keep moving forward.
I attended a council meeting on Oct. 14 and in my opinion that was not a council meeting it was a campaign rally for the two council members that are up for re-election and to praise the town manager. Yes she fills out grants for the town, but remember that is her job.
In closing, if elected to town council I will promise to work my hardest to keep the town moving forward and to keep the politics like it should be, the council runs the town business and the town manager and not the other way around and I will keep the meetings professional and to listen to all who comes before council and to answer any questions that are asked about town business.
Thank you,
Walter Nicely
