The Covington High School Class of 1959 celebrated its 55th class reunion on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10 and 11.
Classmates came from Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Texas and across Virginia to celebrate the festivities.
The Class of 1959 contained 125 graduates.
Friday’s event was held at Mountain View Restaurant with 36 attending. This was a casual pizza party where everyone enjoyed seeing classmates again, some as many as 55 years ago.
Saturday afternoon activities included a picnic, which had to be moved indoors due to the weather, and a tour of Covington High School. The tour proved to be a highlight for some as they found their homerooms and where they sat in the auditorium for assemblies and pep rallies.
On Saturday evening, the group again met at Mountain View Restaurant for dinner with 40 attending. Jimmie Long of Monroe gave the invocation.
Class officers, Ron Huffman, vice president, and Bill Cooke, treasurer, made some brief remarks.
A candlelight memorial service for 44 deceased class members was conducted by Nancy Rice Ferris, of Richmond, and Carole Steele Huffman.
Recognition was given to “First Time Attending a Class Reunion:” Kim Neill Van Cura and Dorothy Smith Bowen; “Traveled the Greatest Distance:” Donna McBee Gabbert from Texas; “Most Recent Marriage:” Virginia Gabbert Hogg; “Married the Longest:” Donna McBee Gabbert; “Largest Family – Children and Grandchildren:” Nancy Rice Ferris.
The door prize of a flower arrangement was won by Jimmie Long.
After each graduate introduced themselves and told briefly what they had been doing for 55 years, there was a brief visit by “Elvis” to entertain the group.
