Mr. Bobby Joe Dawson, Sr., age 79, of Covington, died Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at his residence.  He was the husband of the late Marlene Jones Dawson.
Mr. Dawson was born July 1, 1939 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Joseph Chapman Dawson and Mary Givens Dawson. 

A lifetime resident of this community, he enjoyed working on cars and was an accomplished mechanic.  Mr. Dawson worked for Dominion Virginia Power for over forty years.  Bobby was a member of the Covington Fire Department from April 9, 1982 until July 1, 2004 and a member of the Dominion Virginia Power Union.
Mr. Dawson is survived by his children, Randall Wayne Dawson, Roger Allen Dawson and wife, Janet, Michelle Kimberlin and husband, Will, Leisa Dawson Kimberlin and husband, Norman, all of Covington; two  grandchildren whom he raised as his own, Charlene Sass and Kristie Kimberlin and husband, Chuckie; eleven grandchildren, Bobby Joe Dawson, III, Hannah Jefferies, Samantha Dawson, Beth Ann Dawson, Blake Dawson, Victoria Humphries, Austin Kimberlin, Zach Humphries, Ethyn Kimberlin, Nathan Kimberlin and Abigail Kimberlin; eight great grandchildren, Autumn, Logan, Abby, Daylin, Conner, Scot, Riley and Marley-Ray. His brothers; Johnny Dawson and Dean Dawson. His sister Trudy Dawson Wright and his sister Linda Dawson Wright who has gone above and beyond to take special care of her brother.    
In addition to his wife, Marlene Jones Dawson, Mr. Dawson was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Joe Dawson, Jr. and Fabian Dawson, a daughter, Tammy Dawson, a granddaughter, Marlena Dawson, his brother Billy Dawson and his sister Dorothy Dawson Clark.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 17, 2018, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Hollenbeck officiating. 

Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by Covington Fire Department.
Pallbearers will be Randall Dawson, Zach Humphries, Ethyn Kimberlin, Austin Kimberlin, Blake Dawson, Nathan Kimberlin, Logan Kimberlin and Lonnie “Bubby” Givens who was like one of his own.

Alternate Pallbearers will be Terry Simpson, Bob Simmons, Bobby “Lil Bobby” Dawson III and Harry “Butch” Brown.
The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 12:30 P.M. until time of service and at other times at the residence, 305 E. Oak Street, Covington.
