Mrs. Nellie Louise Sprouse Kern, of Covington, died Saturday, August 18, 2018, at the Brian Center Nursing Home-Alleghany, Low Moor. She was the wife of the late Philip Jackson Kern, Sr.
Mrs. Kern was born in Clifton Forge, the daughter of the late Riley Lee Sprouse and Ethel Paxton Sprouse.
During her working career, she was employed as an assistant branch manager by the former Covington National Bank. Nellie was a member of Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Kern is survived by a daughter, Kathryn K. Comer and husband, Dale of Covington; two grandchildren: Rebecca C. Fogarty and husband, James, Dagny C. Wills and husband, Tommy; and two great grandchildren: Ava Wills and Lucas Fogarty.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Kern was preceded in death by a son, Philip J. Kern, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Hirst Kern; two brothers, Gordon Sprouse and Elsie Sprouse; and two sisters, Lena S. Love and Marie S. Gibbs.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Alleghany Memorial Park with Rev. Donnie Bowker officiating.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 2306 S. Church Avenue, Covington, VA 24426.
