CLIFTON FORGE, VA (VR) – On October 1, 2026 the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office and the Clifton Forge Police Department responded to 1000 College Drive, Clifton Forge, VA for an individual experiencing a mental health crisis. The individual did possess a knife, but did not threaten anyone other than their self and was located outside of all buildings in the parking lot.

Upon arrival of law enforcement, the individual dropped the knife and was taken into custody in the parking lot. Members of the Mobile Crisis Response Team responded as well and were able calm the individual to the point that they could be transported to Lewis Gale Alleghany safely for treatment.
No faculty, students or law enforcement were in danger at any time.

Entry to the campus was temporarily blocked due to the incident taking place in the parking lot.

According to Sheriff Kyle Moore, all of the Deputies and Officers responded in a very quick and professional manner and were thankfully able to handle this situation without injury to anyone. We would like to thank Clifton Forge P.D. and the Mobile Crisis Response Team for all of their assistance as well as the administration of Mountain Gateway Community College.

The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone, that if you know someone that is going through any kind of mental health crisis to please call 988 the international number for crisis situations, 911 to get law enforcement assistance and the Mobile Crisis Team can be activated, or the Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board at 540-965-2100.
