COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany put together its most dominant performance of the season Friday night, shutting out Waynesboro 41-0.
The Cougars scored on their first possession and never looked back, taking a 28-0 lead into halftime before adding another touchdown in the third quarter and one more in the fourth.
Buddy Leisure-White led the way on the ground, scoring five touchdowns on runs of 2, 5, 20, 8 and 45 yards. Talyn Elliott added a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Colten Jack on a 1-yard scoring play.
Mason Hale was 5-for-5 on extra points. The Cougars’ final touchdown came after a blocked extra-point attempt.
With Waynesboro behind them, Alleghany now turns its attention to Stuarts Draft.
Head coach Will Fields said the Cougars will have to be disciplined on both sides of the ball against a Stuarts Draft defense that has been strong against the run.
“Stuarts Draft plays good defense, so we will be working on sustaining blocks,” Fields said.
The Cougars have leaned heavily on their running game, but Fields expects that to be tested Friday night.
“The biggest challenge will be in maintaining the running game we’ve leaned on; they play pretty good run defense, so it will likely be a strength on strength matchup,” Fields said.
Defensively, the Cougars will have to stay disciplined in the secondary. Fields said Stuarts Draft can attack through the air while also mixing in the running game.
“Because they like to mix intermediate and deep passing with the run game, discipline in the secondary will be paramount for us,” Fields said.
After holding Waynesboro scoreless, Alleghany will look to carry that defensive effort into its matchup with Stuarts Draft
