LOW MOOR, VA (VR) — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is expanding professional development opportunities for paraprofessionals as the division continues to provide staff with training and support to better serve students.
The division recently brought paraprofessionals together for a training session focused on their daily work and the needs of students.
Paraprofessionals work alongside teachers and other school staff to support students at every grade level, from prekindergarten through high school.
Cynthia Morgan, Director of Instruction, presented the Alleghany Highlands School Board with an update on the training during the instructional spotlight segment of its Aug. 17 meeting.
A similar training was provided in 2025 at Jeter-Watson Elementary School, by Dee Ann Tickner, who now serves as the principal of the school and Morgan. This year, it was expanded to include paraprofessionals from across the school division.
The most recent training, held at Mountain View Elementary School, gave paraprofessionals an opportunity to work in small groups, discuss real classroom situations and share ways to support students.
The training focused on helping paraprofessionals support students and handle their daily responsibilities. It included guidance on confidentiality, technology use and other AHPS expectations.
Topics also included:
Supporting student growth: Ways to keep students engaged, encourage independence and build positive relationships.
Professional standards: Expectations for classroom support, safety and protecting student privacy.
Responding to questions: How to respond to questions from parents or community members in public while directing school-related questions to
teachers and school staff.
The training is part of AHPS’ ongoing effort to provide teachers and staff with updated training, professional development and support. Additional training opportunities for paraprofessionals are planned throughout the school year.
The goal is to give paraprofessionals the guidance and resources they need to support students and meet the expectations of their roles.
“Every interaction matters, every word of encouragement matters,” Morgan said. “Our paraprofessionals make a lasting difference in the lives of our students. Their dedication helps create classrooms where students can learn, grow and succeed.”
