LYNCHBURG, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany High School track and field team brought home 12 state medals at the VHSL Class 3 State Championships, highlighted by four state titles and several podium finishes.
Ja’Kara Heighter led the girls team, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.33 seconds and finishing second in the 200-meter dash in 26.18. Kiera Lowman earned two medals, placing third in the 800 meters (2:22.73) and fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:04.00), while Faith Barron added a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:12.43.
Alleghany’s relay teams also excelled. The girls 4×100-meter relay captured a state championship in 50.29, while the girls 4×800-meter relay claimed another title in 10:01.08.
On the boys side, Evan Bishop won a state championship in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.80. The 4×400-meter relay team earned a state runner-up finish in 3:25.50, while Miles Christian and Maddox Wickline placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 meters. Desmond Jordan added a fifth-place medal in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Cougars finished the meet with 12 state medals and four state championships.
