RICHMOND, Va. (VR)  — The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is bringing its free Advanced Rider Training program, including the popular StreetMasters Course, to Northern and Southwest Virginia this spring and summer. New this year, courses will be offered in Manassas and Abingdon, with returning locations in Richmond and Newport News. With this expansion, more riders across the Commonwealth will have the chance to sharpen their motorcycle skills with a certified coach, just in time for riding season.

Participants can choose from three dynamic courses: the Circuit RiderCourse, StreetMasters and the Advanced 3-Wheel Training. What sets this training apart is its rider-first approach. Instructors actively observe participants on the course and provide real-time coaching, letting riders focus on the skills they want to master most. It’s the perfect opportunity for experienced riders to refresh key techniques and tackle new skills not covered in the Basic RiderCourse.

“No matter how long you’ve been riding, there’s always more to learn,” said DMV Commissioner Saundra M. Jack. “These free advanced courses give riders a chance to practice real-world skills that can really matter out on the road.”

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May serves as an important reminder that preparation and training can help prevent crashes and save lives. Data show that last year alone, 2,006 crashes involving motorcycles resulted in 101 motorcyclists losing their lives on Virginia’s roadways. These numbers reinforce the need for motorists to watch for motorcycles and for all road users to share the road safely.

Paid through the Virginia Rider Training Program and taught by BeCrashFree, each course includes a full day of instruction led by experienced professionals. Participants must bring their own motorcycle, all required personal protective equipment (helmet, gloves, long pants, jeans or riding pants preferred, riding jacket, full-finger gloves), and proof of insurance, and must already hold a motorcycle endorsement to enroll.

Course Dates and Locations
The free, one-day courses will take place at the following locations:

  • May 16–17 — StreetMasters, Manassas
  • May 16–17 — Advanced 3-Wheel Training, Manassas
  • June 13–14 — StreetMasters, Abingdon
  • June 13 — Advanced 3-Wheel Training, Abingdon
  • August 8–9 — StreetMasters, Richmond
  • August 8 — Advanced 3-Wheel Training, Richmond
  • September 12–13 — StreetMasters, Newport News
  • September 12 —Advanced 3-Wheel Training, Newport News

Registration for each course opens 45 days before the class date. Each session is limited to 60 participants, and riders are encouraged to register early to secure a spot.
