LEXINGTON — Alleghany’s girls soccer team kicked off the season with a win here Thursday.
Freshman Carlee Lanford scored off a direct kick in the second half, lifting the Mountaineers past Rockbridge County, 1-0.
Another freshman — Emma Williams — earned the shutout win in goal.
“This was a big win for us,” said AHS coach Bob Donnan. “To take our first game on the road against a good Rockbridge team was a great start.
“Our goalie, Emma Williams, had an exceptional game and rose to every challenge,” Donnan continued. “We had strong defense led by senior game captain Briana Ryder, along with center defender Anne Fu and defensive midfielder Julia Bryant. Carlee Lanford’s placement on the direct kick from outside of the box was excellent and the goal was the difference in the game. It was a good night for us. It was Gabriella Pichette’s birthday. She said winning the game was the best birthday present.”
Alleghany (1-0) will host Rockbridge County in a rematch Wednesday at Mountaineer Field.
Alleghany was also a 1-0 winner in Thursday’s junior varsity contest.
Madeline Lane scored the goal — a first-half direct kick — for the Mounties, while Katelynn Patterson picked up the shutout in goal.
