WAYNESBORO, Va. (VR) – Alleghany fell just short in a 5-4 battle with Waynesboro, a match that swung on a tight doubles round after a competitive singles split across the lineup.
The Cougars picked up four singles wins behind strong play throughout the order. Bubby Entsminger set the tone at No. 1 with an 8-2 win, controlling the match from the start. Ayven Warren battled through a tight No. 2 matchup, finishing on top 8-6 in a grind that stayed close from first serve. Riley Smith added another point at No. 3 with an 8-4 win, while Parker Willis closed out a key win at No. 6, edging his opponent 8-6 to keep Alleghany in position heading into doubles.
Waynesboro countered in the middle of the lineup, taking No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Colten Jones fell 2-8 at No. 4, while Quinten Harris was edged 5-8 at No. 5 as the teams split the singles points and headed into doubles deadlocked in the match.
Doubles proved decisive. Entsminger and Smith were narrowly beaten 6-8 at No. 1, Warren and Jones dropped a 5-8 decision at No. 2, and Harris and Tallman also fell 5-8 at No. 3 as Waynesboro swept the doubles lineup to secure the overall win.
Despite strong singles play across the board, Alleghany was unable to close out the match in doubles, with Waynesboro claiming the 5-4 final.
