CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS), in partnership with the Town of Clifton Forge, will host the 3rd Annual Developmental Services Awareness Festival on March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Church Street in Clifton Forge. The community celebration will feature food and craft vendors, entertainers, local businesses, medical professionals, and AHCS staff, offering engaging activities and entertainment for attendees of all ages throughout the day.

The festival is held in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 to highlight the contributions, abilities, and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities and to encourage communities to support opportunities that allow
individuals to live, work, and thrive.

Now in its third year, the festival continues to grow as a community tradition focused on celebrating individuals with diverse abilities while promoting awareness, inclusion, and understanding of developmental and intellectual disabilities.

“Inclusive communities are stronger communities,” said Ingrid Barber, Executive Director of AHCS.

“This event brings people together to celebrate the talents and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities while connecting families with valuable resources and support services available throughout the Alleghany Highlands.”

Several community organizations will participate in the event, including the AHCS Prevention Team, Boys Home, the YMCA, PEATC, Safe Homes, and numerous waiver providers who support individuals and families throughout the Alleghany Highlands. Attendees will enjoy a variety of activities including a magic show by magician Steven Conrad, visits from the Easter Bunny, face painting, sensory-friendly experiences, Supportive Saturdays activities, and paint courses.

The Clifton Forge School of the Arts will have its art gallery open featuring artwork created by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Clifton Forge Public Library will also host children’s programming at 1:00 p.m., including a book reading and hands-on activity.
Food vendors will offer a variety of options throughout the day, including Cousins Maine Lobster, Thai Naka Express, Shriner’s Donuts, Sip + Sparkle, and Simply Sweet.

Live entertainment will be featured throughout the festival with performances by Country Mountain Thunder, Pop Rockers, Soul and Rhythm line dancers, Garlynda’s Fancy Feet, A1 Studios, and Rebels of Rhythm, providing something for everyone to enjoy. Additional vendors and activities may be added as the event approaches, promising an exciting and engaging day for the entire community.

The community is also invited to celebrate creativity, remembrance, and opportunity during the “Art from the Heart” Paint Event, taking place during the festival as a fundraiser for the Jada Callender Memorial Scholarship Fund. Details are available on the AHCS Facebook page.

AHCS encourages community members, families, and local organizations to attend and show their support for individuals with developmental disabilities while celebrating the spirit of inclusion across the Alleghany Highlands.
