COVINGTON, Va. (VR) -  The Covington VA250 Carnival wrapped up Saturday night with a boom — literally — as a spectacular fireworks display brought the three-day celebration to a close.
The event drew strong crowds throughout the weekend, with Saturday night attracting the largest attendance. Families and visitors filled the carnival grounds, enjoying rides, games, food vendors, and live entertainment. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, screams from thrill-seekers, and the aroma of classic carnival favorites.
The event was well received across the Alleghany Highlands, with many attendees suggesting it should become an annual tradition.
Saturday night's entertainment featured REO Survivor and Co., who delivered a high-energy performance at the amphitheater that kept music fans entertained throughout the evening.
The celebration concluded with a fireworks show that lasted nearly 20 minutes, lighting up the night sky and providing a memorable ending to the weekend festivities.
Covington Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Worley thanked the many volunteers, sponsors, organizations, and community members who helped make the event possible.
It had been a very long time since the Alleghany Highlands hosted an event of this size and scope. Thanks to the efforts of Worley and countless others behind the scenes, the VA250 Carnival proved to be a successful celebration and a fitting tribute as America approaches its 250th birthday. CLIFTON FORGE — A sold-out crowd filled the Historic Masonic Theatre on Sunday evening for the Virginia 250 Flag Day Patriotic Tribute, a special celebration marking America's upcoming 250th birthday.
The free concert featured the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro David Stewart Wiley, joined by special soloist Dr. E. Daryl Duff.
One of the evening's most memorable moments came during the "Armed Forces Salute," when local veterans were invited to stand and be recognized as the musical tribute to their respective military branches was performed. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause as veterans throughout the theater were honored for their service.
The presentation was made possible through the support of the Alleghany Foundation, Historic Masonic Theatre, Town of Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, City of Covington, Mountain Gateway Community College Educational Foundation, Mountain Gateway Community College, Alleghany Highlands Arts Council, and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

Richmond, Va. (VR) – Charitable organizations that solicit contributions in Virginia can now file their required registration documentation online. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Charitable and Regulatory Programs (OCRP), which administers the charitable solicitations program, launched the new digital platform, Evoke, this month as part of an ongoing commitment to government efficiency and empowering consumers.

All charitable organizations that intend to solicit contributions within the Commonwealth of Virginia or have funds solicited on their behalf, unless exempt under Virginia law, are required to register with OCRP. More than 13,000 charities, professional solicitors, and fundraising counsels are registered to solicit contributions in the Commonwealth. Previously, registration had to be filed on paper, and the charities’ records could be requested by contacting VDACS. In the Evoke platform, charities can now file their registration documents electronically, and the records will also be available in the online database for members of the public to easily access and search.

The Evoke platform came online in time for National Consumer Protection Week, March 1-7, which seeks to raise awareness and amplify resources for consumers to learn more about how they are protected from fraud and errors. The new online system furthers VDACS’ commitment to government efficiency and empowering consumers. As all charitable solicitation records become available in the online database, consumers will be able to readily access information about a charity before deciding whether to donate funds to the organization. Using Evoke will reduce registration processing time, enable charities to easily track their status, and OCRP staff expect that it will reduce instances of overpayments and improve rates of application completion, reducing the need for follow-up from OCRP staff.

“VDACS continues to modernize its technology and procedures to better serve residents of the Commonwealth,” said VDACS Commissioner Charles Green. “This online platform will be put to use across a range of VDACS programs in the future, making services more efficient and easier to use.”

Before its next renewal date, each charity will receive direct communication from OCRP regarding how to use Evoke to file online. For more information, visit www.vdacs.virginia.gov/food-charitable-solicitation.shtml.
