COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – It is hard to put into words the emotion of this year’s Valentines for Veterans card campaign. The Alleghany Highlands community has once again stepped up to pay honor to our veterans in our community, local nursing homes and nine veterans’ hospitals in surrounding communities.
The list of those who helped grows every year. A group of ladies reached out to us to be a part of serving the veterans and did over 300 cards and at the last minute did another 20 to help us break our record – we sent 1,260 cards! Thank you, Betty Leitch, Jessie Johnson, Billie Gibson, and Amaya Macey for your veteran support. Once again, our local elementary schools outdid themselves. Thank you, Mountain View Elementary (project headed by Auxiliary member, Debbie Rodgers and valentines were done by VPI class – teacher Miss Kolby Hiner), Jeter-Watson Elementary School (led by Librarian, Barbara Childs), Callaghan Elementary School (Mrs. Middleton, 2nd grade), Sharon Elementary School (Mrs. Hayslett – Kindergarten and Mrs. Asma – 2nd grade), Boys Home (with the help of Laura Costigan, Manager of Donor Relations), Alleghany Highlands Regional Library and First Christian Church Youth Group (Jessica Freeman leader). Thank you so much to all the schools for taking part in this program — learning as they go and putting smiles on hundreds of veterans.
The Curtis A Smith VFW Post 1033 and auxiliary have been serving the veterans for years with heartfelt pride in them and the price that was paid to have the freedoms we enjoy today in these great United Slates. The Valentines for Veterans campaign not only recognizes veterans but our local public servants who watch over us daily.
Thank you again Alleghany Highlands for supporting VFW Post 1033 efforts to reach as many veterans as possible and say, “thank you for your service”. If anyone has any veteran questions or needs assistance in any way, please reach out to us. Call Marian Paxton at 843-653-6098 or email to marianpaxton@gmail.com.
