HOT SPRINGS — Do you know a child who’d like to learn the violin, viola, cello or bass? The Allegheny Mountain String Project is the area’s only comprehensive strings program and this weekend is a great opportunity to find out more about it.
The Allegheny Mountain String Project will present its season finale on Sunday, beginning at 3 p.m. at Garth Newel Music Center in Bath County. Admission is free; no tickets are required.
Though the students can be seen throughout the area during the year (farmers markets, the Highland County Maple Festival, the Bath Bluegrass Jamboree, local Ruritan Clubs, community senior centers and even private events), they have a formal recital in each county where each student performs solo on stage with piano accompaniment, and a grand finale performance where they combine in small and large groups.
This year’s grand finale concert on Sunday will feature classical composers such as Dvorak and Tchaikovsky as well as other folk and popular favorites. The concert will conclude with the Allegheny Mountain String Orchestra, the region’s only youth orchestra.
The Allegheny Mountain String Project is a program of Garth Newel Music Center, however it is also supported by organizations that make the program low-cost and accessible to every local student. It would not exist without the support of The Alleghany Foundation, the Bath County Arts Association, the Bolar Ruritan Club, the Community Foundation of Central Blue Ridge, The Guilford Foundation, and the Highland County Arts Council.
Lessons are held at Garth Newel Music Center, the Clifton Forge School of the Arts and the Highland Center. All locations will take new students for the 2019-2020 season.
“Sunday’s concert is a great opportunity to see what AMSP is about and talk with students or instructors at the after concert reception about how to join in,” said Jamie McArdle, Allegheny Mountain String Project program director.
For more information, contact Garth Newel Music Center at (540) 839-5018 or at www.garthnewel.org.
