Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. LYNCHBURG — The National Railway Historical Society’s Blue Ridge Chapter has donated $1,000 to the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society in Clifton Forge for caboose restoration.
The Blue Ridge NRHS Chapter  presented the donation during its April meeting as part of the fund-raising for restoration of the C&O Historical Society’s recently acquired steel caboose.
Cliff Clements of Lynchburg, C&OHS board member, accepted the donation from Blue Ridge NRHS President Rick Johnson, also of Lynchburg.
The caboose, number 903572, was donated recently by CSX Corporation, the C&O’s successor.
The caboose, currently located at the Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, was last based at CSX’s Quinnimont, W.Va., terminal.
The Blue Ridge NRHS chapter is part of a national organization devoted to the study and preservation of railway history.
The non-profit C&O Historical Society is one of the largest railroad preservation organizations in the country.
Its full-service archives is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Clifton Forge. (see cohs.org for information).
Additionally, the society operates a railway museum and interpretative display featuring ex-C&O buildings, locomotives and railroad cars.
