Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. Memorial Day ceremonies will be held in Covington and Clifton Forge Monday at 11 a.m.
In Clifton Forge, Burnside-Carpenter Post No. 4299 of the Veterans of  Foreign Wars will hold its annual ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street.
The Covington ceremony, conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post No. 1033, will be  held in front the Alleghany  County Courthouse on Main Street.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May to honor men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Two other days celebrate those who serve or have served in the U.S. military: Veterans Day, which is held on Nov. 11 and celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans; and Arm-ed Forces Day, a remembrance celebrated earlier in May that honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.
