Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. DALEVILLE — A historic girls soccer season came to an end for the Alleghany Mountaineers here Thursday.
Top-seeded Lord Botetourt (17-2) knocked off Alleghany, 8-0, in the first round of the Class 3, Region D tournament.
The Mounties ended the year with a record of 6-10-1. The six wins are a program record.
“We made a leap this year,” said AHS?coach Bob Donnan. “And we’re looking for a big leap again next year.”
Lord Botetourt advances to the regional semifinals on Tuesday where they will face either Christiansburg or Staunton River for a berth in the championship match and the state tournament.
“Botetourt has a really strong team,” said Donnan. “They dressed 23 players. They are a good passing team. They wore us down.”

Despite the loss, Donnan was pleased with the season.
“When you play good competition like Botetourt, you see where you need to improve,” he said. “On the other hand, we’re really close. I see ways we can take that next step. But that’s easy to say and hard to do.”
Donnan made special mention of senior Regan Meadows.
“She addressed the team after the game and told them how special this team was,” Donnan finished. “You love that as a coach. It was a nice moment for the team.”
