COVINGTON, Va, (VR) - Families turned out in large numbers Saturday for the City of Covington Parks and Recreation’s Youth Day, enjoying a full afternoon of activities and entertainment. The event featured performances from two dance troupes from the Alleghany Highlands, while kids took part in archery, painting, the bungee trampoline, fishing with Douthat State Park, kart racing, free putt-putt golf and more. The well-attended event highlighted another outstanding job by the City of Covington Parks and Recreation staff in bringing the community together for a fun-filled day. Robert “Bobby” Eugene Paxton

Robert “Bobby” Eugene Paxton, age 79, of Covington, died Sunday, December 14, 2025, at his residence. Bobby was born, June 9, 1946, in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Howard B. Paxton, Sr. and Phyllis Tucker Paxton; a brother, Howard “Junie” B. Howard,
Jr.; a daughter, Crystal Paxton; and a great-grandchild, Brynnlee Willow Hicks.

For over twenty years Bobby worked at the former Hercules/AET plant until it closed and afterwards was head of security at Alleghany Regional Hospital. He was a former member of Pinnell Chapel United Methodist Church and proudly served in the National Guard for more than twenty years.  He was an avid baseball player and fan, cherished his time hunting and fishing, and loved wrestling and classic westerns.

Left to mourn his loss is his wife of 59 years, Violet Bowers Paxton; two daughters, Mellisa Powell of Seaman, Ohio, Shannon (Mark) Cox of Covington; one son, Dale Paxton of Jacksonville, FL; four grandsons, Dusty (Heather) Hicks, Josh (Christy) Cox of Covington, Trevor (Alexis) Cox of Gonzales, LA, Cooper Paxton of Jacksonville, FL; one granddaughter, Courtney (Brandon) Cobb of Orange; five great grandsons, Cooper, Corbin, Jacob, Lucas,
Paxton;  three great granddaughters, Brooklynn, Scarlette, Presley; two nephews, Dwaine Paxton and Ronnie (Sandy) Paxton of Covington; a dear friend and cousin, Wendell “Popeye” Paxton; and numerous family members.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with Rev. David Brown officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home and at other times at the residence,
7002 Potts Creek Road.

The interment will be held at the Lonestar Cemetery on Friday following the service.

Pallbearers are: Dusty Hicks, Josh Cox, Trevor Cox, Brandon Cobb, Dwaine Paxton, Cooper Nicely and Wendell “Popeye” Paxton.

Arritt Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements for Mr. Paxton.
