Elliston, Va (VR) — The Bath County Chargers delivered a resilient performance under the “interestingly strange to say” Thursday night lights, overcoming miscues and penalties to defeat the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs 37-18 in a Pioneer District matchup marked by big offensive plays, spirited defense, and a dash of homecoming drama.

The game opened with Bath County receiving a short kickoff at midfield, quickly establishing the running game behind standout athlete Ethan Bryant. Early runs set up the rhythm, and after a face mask penalty moved the chains, Bryant broke through Eastern Montgomery’s line and into the end zone for the game’s opening touchdown. The successful two-point conversion put Bath County ahead 8-0.

Eastern Montgomery answered in kind.

After some initial struggles against Bath County’s stout defense, tackles for losses, and difficulty moving the ball on the ground, the Mustangs seized their opportunity. A well-executed pass caught Bath County’s secondary flat-footed for an easy score. However, their two-point attempt fell short, leaving Bath County on top, 8-6, as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter belonged mostly to Bath County. Bryant continued his dominance out of the backfield, breaking loose for a 24-yard run to set his team up in the red zone. Minutes later, the Chargers pounded in another touchdown, this time capped by a two-point conversion to extend the lead to 16-6.

The Mustangs struggled to muster any gains, stymied by offsides penalties and a critical bad snap that cost them field position. On offense, Bath County’s drive sputtered with a holding call wiping out a potential touchdown, but Hunter Kirby later found Walker Randozzo in the end zone, stretching the advantage to 22-6. The two-point try failed, but the Chargers maintained a two-score lead at the break.

Eastern Montgomery’s woes continued into the third quarter. Faced with third-and-long, the Mustangs’ passing attack initially faltered. Yet, seizing a lapse in coverage, Eastern Montgomery struck with a 40-yard touchdown catch, though that play was later called back.

Bath County’s offense, however, was far from perfect. Penalties and botched snaps repeatedly threatened to derail promising drives. After a 52-yard run by Bryant set the Chargers up near the goal line, consecutive penalties and a holding call erased a touchdown. Eastern Montgomery capitalized on a bad snap, recovering the fumble and regaining possession, but Bath County’s defense held firm, forcing a punt to regain momentum.

Wasting no time, the Chargers’ Hunter Kirby linked up with Bryant for a short touchdown pass, extending the Bath County advantage. A successful kick made it 37-12. As the final quarter unfolded, Eastern Montgomery refused to quit, marching sixty-four yards before punching in a short touchdown run. Their final two-point attempt was denied, leaving the score at 37-18.

The Mustangs sought to build momentum late, relying on creative pass plays and the legs of their quarterback, but Bath County’s pass rush and coverage kept them in check. The night’s defensive highlight came on an interception by Bath County’s Walker Randozzo sealing the Mustang’s fate as the clock wound down.

With the win, Bath County improved its record, bouncing back with authority after previous setbacks. Bryant’s consistent ground game and key plays from Kirby and the defense provided the edge, while the Mustangs were left to regroup following their gritty showing on the road.

Final Score Bath County Chargers 37, Eastern Montgomery Mustangs 18.
