ALLEGHANY COUNTY — Under the bright Friday night lights of Casey Field, what began as a feat of defensive prowess between the Alleghany County Cougars and the Wilson Memorial Hornets unfolded into a tense battle, ultimately ending with the Cougars falling 17-3.

In front of an energized home crowd, Alleghany showed grit and flashes of offensive promise but was undone by penalties, turnovers, and a determined Wilson Memorial team that surged in the second half.

The game kicked off with pride as the crowd stood for the national anthem, and fireworks, generously provided through area sponsors, set the stage for a night full of anticipation.

Both teams took the field with immense energy, but it was clear from the opening whistle that defense would set the tone. After receiving the ball, Wilson Memorial’s opening drive stumbled almost immediately. Matthew Sisk provided a spark with a solid return to the 36-yard line for the visiting Hornets, but their momentum was damaged by an early illegal procedure penalty. The Cougars’ defense stiffened, forcing a quick third-and-long situation that the Hornets could not convert.

Alleghany’s offense, led by quarterback Des Jordan, looked poised to capitalize.

With a series of determined runs by Jordan and running back Carter Nicely, the Cougars steadily moved the chains. Nicely broke through with a 14-yard run for a fresh set of downs mid-drive, while Jordan showed great composure both on the ground and finding his receivers through the air on short gain passes. Unfortunately, a costly illegal procedure penalty sent the Cougars backward, and shortly after, a hurried incomplete pass led to a turnover on downs.

The first quarter continued as a defensive showcase, with neither team able to find the end zone.

The Cougars’ defense, anchored by Brady May and Austin Green, continually stuffed the run and pressured Wilson Memorial’s quarterback. However, the Hornets eventually found a rhythm with a long 40-yard pass play setting them up deep in Alleghany territory in the second quarter, but the Cougar defense responded with a dramatic goal-line stand. The stadium erupted when Alleghany forced a turnover on downs at the two-yard line, keeping the game scoreless and bolstering Cougar spirits.

Alleghany mounted a determined drive in response.

Jordan connected on a clutch pass to Buddy Leisure-White for a 7-yard gain and expertly managed the clock to close the first quarter. However, penalties continued to plague the Cougars, a second illegal procedure saw the team backed up deep. A highlight reel moment came as Jordan, under heavy pressure, scrambled free and made a daring completion to May for a critical first down. Despite these flashes, the Cougars’ offensive line struggled to hold back a relentless Wilson Memorial pass rush. The pressure led to hurried throws and an interception late in the second quarter, giving the Hornets a short field.

The Cougar defense held tough, limiting Wilson Memorial to a field goal as the first half expired, sending Alleghany to the locker room trailing only 3-0.

The second half opened with excitement and hope for Cougar fans as Alleghany moved the ball with authority. Nicely broke several tackles for key first downs, and Jordan again took charge with timely completions. Yet, Wilson Memorial adjusted their defense, closing running lanes and forcing the Cougars into difficult third-and-long scenarios.

Turnovers and penalties returned to haunt Alleghany, stalling promising drives. Midway through the third quarter, Alleghany managed to tie the score at 3 with a successful field goal.

But as the fourth quarter approached, Wilson Memorial found another gear.

Led by running back Keyvon Jones and quarterback keepers up the middle, the Hornets steadily chipped away at the Cougar defense, culminating in a punishing touchdown run to take a 10-3 lead.

Desperate for a comeback, the Cougars turned to the air but struggled to re-establish momentum. Another interception set up Wilson Memorial inside Cougar territory, and running back Clinton Coffey broke loose for a 38-yard touchdown scamper with under two minutes to play, sealing the outcome.

Despite the defeat, Alleghany’s squad showed resilience and flashes of brilliance, especially on defense. The Cougars played with heart and stuck to their game plan, but turnovers and penalties put them in tough spots they were unable to recover from. The final whistle sounded with Wilson Memorial on top, 17-3, ending Alleghany’s unbeaten start to the season. While the Cougars will lament missed opportunities, Friday’s showdown offered a blueprint to build upon, a stingy defense, a never-quit attitude, and a community that continued cheering until the final seconds ticked away.

As the lights dimmed over Cougar Stadium, the team walked off with heads high, determined to regroup and fight another day.

The road won’t get any easier, but if the night’s effort proved anything, it’s that the Cougars have plenty of fight left in them. Final Score: Wilson Memorial Yellow Jackets 17, Alleghany County Cougars 3.
