Cameron Frye thought it was “kind of cool” when he first learned how to hook a bowling ball.
Frye had another cool bowling moment recently at Thunder Alley.
Rolling in the newly-formed Covington High School bowling club, the Cougar junior fired a 300 game.
At 17 years old, Frye is the youngest ever to achieve perfection at the local bowling center.
“I took up bowling around 2016,” said Frye. “I would go down there on dollar days because I supported the Special Olympic people and I would go there and bowl with my friend.
“When I learned how to hook the ball, I thought it was really, really cool, so I started to put more practice into it,” he added.
Frye is a two-hander attacking the lanes from the right side.
“I picked it up myself,” he said. “I watched a lot of (World No. 1) Jason Belmonte.”
Frye had a previous high game of 263.
“It wasn’t real until the seventh (frame),” Frye said of his 300. “I was throwing them as everyone was like Cameron’s max out is a 300. I thought I would find some way to screw it up. But when the seventh frame hit, I was like, I’m six away from perfection.
“The first strike in the 10th I almost passed out. Mrs. (Robbie) Thomas calmed me down and I was able to get back up there. I was able to throw one more and then the last one, I don’t even remember the last one. I really, really don’t.”
Frye and Darian Williams, another student, went to Thomas and CHS principal Derek Cantrell about the idea of a bowling club.
The club now has 11 members and is sponsored by Thomas and Daniel Hamm.
“We are really proud of Cameron and his 300 game,” said Thomas, who works in the guidance department at CHS and is an avid bowler and local and state association board member. “It was tough on him, but he was able to hold it together.”
• Matt Paxton rolled his 16th 300 game, his 13th at Thunder Alley, in the Hootenanny Trio Fun League Thursday night.
Paxton strung together games of 202, 220 and 300 for a 722 set.
