COVINGTON, Va (VR) –  The anticipation in Alleghany County is palpable as the undefeated Alleghany Cougars prepare to host the district-leading Stuarts Draft Cougars this Friday night in a highly-anticipated homecoming showdown that could reshape the Shenandoah District standings. The Alleghany Cougars (4-0, 2-0 district) have electrified fans and confounded opponents so far this season, clawing their way to a perfect start and positioning themselves for what could be the most consequential game this season. Standing in their path are the formidable Stuarts Draft Cougars (4-1, 3-0 district), whose robust start in district play has earned them the number one spot in the standings.

While homecoming is always a centerpiece of any high school football schedule, Friday’s matchup promises even higher stakes, with both teams boasting spotless district records. Victory would propel Alleghany into first place, either in a tie with, or outright above, perennial contender Wilson Memorial High School, depending on other district results this week. This games probably been circled on both teams’ calendars from the start of the season andthey know what’s on the line, for the district, for Alleghany’s homecoming, and for all of the work the teams have been putting in. There’s no bigger stage for high school football in Alleghany this week. The scenario is simple, if Alleghany defeats Stuarts Draft, and Wilson Memorial falters against Fort Defiance, Alleghany will seize the outright lead in the district. Even if Wilson Memorial prevails, Alleghany could finish Friday night atop the district in a dead heat, an outcome that makes this homecoming contest even more dramatic.

The Cougars’ journey to this pivotal moment has been hard-fought and well-earned. Their season opener against Brookville High School was a nail-biter, with Alleghany pulling off a comeback for a 27-26 win. Quarterback DesJordan led a late surge with help from otherplaymakers, setting the tone for a season defined by resilience. Alleghany showcased its cross-state dominance in “The Battle of the Border,” besting the Greenbrier East Spartans from West Virginia, 36-26. Running back A.J. Godfrey emerged as a standout, finding the end zone multiple times and igniting the Cougar offense. Week three tested Alleghany’s nerve as they edged Staunton Storm 22-21, rallying in the fourth quarter and securing victory with a vital two-point conversion — again engineered by Des Jordan. Their most recent triumph, a convincing 36-14 victory over Waynesboro, boosted their record to 4-0 and sustained the team’s momentum heading into the biggest game of the year.

Offensive output has been a hallmark of Alleghany’s early success. Quarterback DesJordan has delivered when it counts, notably with three touchdowns against Waynesboro. A.J. Godfrey’s ability to break tackles and find the end zone has made him a nightmare for opponents. On defense, the Cougars have bent but not broken, limiting opponents and consistently making second half adjustments to secure wins. With homecoming energy infusing the stadium, expect even more inspired play this Friday.

Stuarts Draft presents possibly the toughest test yet for Alleghany. Though their sole loss came in the season opener to Central Woodstock, a non–district opponent, Stuarts Draft has been flawless since, posting decisive wins against Luray (26-20), Riverheads (29-13), Fort Defiance (24-0), and a high-scoring blowout of Rockbridge (52-14). Key contributors for Stuarts Draft include running backs Derek Moore, who tallied ninety-sevenyards and a touchdown against Rockbridge, and Baylor Graber, who racked up sixty-two rushing yards and a touchdown. The offensive line, anchored by standout Landon Shifflet, has kept defenses off-balance and paved the way for their prolific ground game. District titles run through games like the matchup coming Friday night.

For the Alleghany community, homecoming is about a football game, but it’s also a celebration of school pride and tradition. Students, alumni, and local fans will pack the stands hoping to see their Cougars claim a landmark win and perhaps establish themselves as front-runners in district title contention. The added pressure has not fazed this resilient Alleghany squad. As the lights come up on Friday night, players and coaches alike know how much is at stake — not only for this season, but for the legacy they hope to create. At the epicenter is the shifting landscape of the Shenandoah District. With Wilson Memorial potentially in the mix, every result reverberates. A victory would not just be a triumph on the scoreboard but an exclamation point for a program on the rise. Homecoming could end up being especially important for a game that couldmean so much, the whole community is asked to come out and support these young adults in what promises to be an unforgettable night.” Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on October 3rd at Casey field. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, wear their Cougar blue, and be ready for a high-stakes contest that could define a season.
