The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a local candidates forum on Thursday, Oct. 9, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Clifton Forge Middle School Forum Hall.  The public is encouraged to attend.

The forum is being sponsored by the chamber as an effort to encourage citizens to become more involved in local government by learning about the issues and positions of each candidate.

The public will be allowed to submit written questions at the forum; a panel of three people will review the questions before they are posed to the candidates.

The moderator will pose the questions to the candidates and each candidate will have a limited time to respond.

At the end of the forum, each candidate will be given three minutes to present statements about their candidacy and explain why they are running for office and their position on various issues.

Charles W. “Chuck” Unroe will run for mayor of Iron Gate. Joseph A. Crawford, Robert W. Daniel, Sr., Richard B. Erskine, Donald M. Hall, Melanie A. Payne-White and Richard R. Unroe will run for Iron Gate Town Council.

Calvin H. Griffin is also running for Iron Gate Town Council in a special election.
James M. Griffith will run for the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors’ Covington District seat.

Carl D. Brinkley, Gayle S. Hillert, Bruce W. Hyler, Sr., Walter G. Nicely, Jr., Edward E. Reynolds, Robert J. Umstead and Ronnie L. Underwood are running for Clifton Forge Town Council.

William B. Zimmerman will run for the Covington City Council District 1 seat, while S. Allen Tucker will run for Covington City Council in District 2.

All candidates are invited to participate.

Questions may be submitted in advance by mail to the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce, 110 Mall Road, Covington, Va. 24426 or email at info@ah-chamber.com. Questions may also be submitted the night of the forum.
