Virginia State Police Investigate Botetourt County Officer-Involved Shooting

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (VR) – At the request of the Botetourt County Sheriff Matt Ward, the Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Division, is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting which occurred Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

At approximately 7:00 a.m. this morning, deputies responded to a 911 call from a male subject that stated he had killed his father. Deputies encountered a male subject outside the residence on High Ridge Circle. During the encounter deputies discharged their firearms striking the subject.  An additional male was found deceased inside the residence.

A firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

The deceased male inside the home has been identified as Hugh Gerard McCaul, 58, of Troutville, Va.

The male suspect outside the residence has been identified as Liam Gerald, McCaul, 23, of Nashville, TN.

No deputies were injured in the incident. 

In accordance with Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office policy, the deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is completed.

The incident remains under investigation.
